We have recently increased our range of Hahnemühle Printmaking Papers to now offer a more comprehensive selection of weights, sizes, pack sizes, and price-points.

Hahnemühle Fine Art Papers are renown for printmaking papers produced on their cylinder mould paper machine, using genuine wool felts. They are ideally suited for traditional artistic intaglio, relief, and monotype printing processes, and for new digital printing technologies on uncoated papers.

The use of genuine wool felt pressing imparts Hahnemühle’s unique matt, velvety soft and finely structured surface, so admired by printmakers. These printmaking papers have a high volume (thickness to gsm ratio) which gives its handling character and particular flexibility.


All paper grades are made from exquisite raw materials, and are highly resistant to aging, acid-free, and vegan (all Hahnemühle papers have these three qualities).


The strongest papers are made from cotton, sometimes referred to as “rags” in reference to the use of second-hand bed linen in the past; however, cotton linters have replaced rags. Linters are short, valuable fibres of cotton seeds. Hahnemühle processes these fibres, which are by-products of the textile and oil industry. No extra cotton is planted for their papers.


Hahnemühle produces both 100% cotton papers and 100% pure alpha-cellulose papers. High-purity alpha-cellulose fibres come from deciduous and coniferous species of trees. All raw materials come from certified and sustainable sources and are gently bleached. Bleaching is necessary so that the wood pigment, lignin, does not cause the paper to yellow. These raw materials carry the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) seal, the TCF seal or the ECF seal for chlorine-free bleaching, which works without environmentally harmful chlorine compounds.


Hahnemühle papers made from pulp are as archival as cotton papers, they just don’t possess quite the same wet strength.

Vice President of Hahnemühle Henrik Bernander: “our paper is made using cylinder mould-made machines”. Mould-made machines are 10x slower than the fourdrinier machines. The genuine wool felts used in the mould-made machine impart a unique surface that is evident on Hahnemühle print papers and highly desireable to professional printmakers.
