Have you ever wondered about working with the quieter hues from the times before Industrialization? When red was made from Dragon’s Blood, yellow from exotic spices, and green from crushed berries?

The new Horadam Naturals from Schmincke are 16 colours exclusively from natural earth pigments and plant resins and extracts, bound in Gum Arabic to offer the natural fusion of watercolour and gouache. These water-based paints are fully resoluble, have good lightfastness, and are 100% vegan.

Painting with these genuine colours from antiquity is like a trip back in time. Red from the madder root has been found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, and the pharaoh’s funeral robes were woven from Indigo dyed cotton. The legend of Dragon’s Blood involved a bloody battle between a dragon and an elephant, creating a tree whose resin produces this translucent reddish-brown. Celadonite was used in Roman frescoes, and Curcuma, or turmeric, has been used for 4000 years as a dye. Pre-historic artists used natural ochres, chalks and charcoals; and beautifully subtle colours such as Lalvarit Violet and Caucasus Earth are derived from mineral-rich earth and stone.

Horadam Naturals have the feel and look of a pre-19th Century paint too. They handle like a gouache: able to be painted as a body-colour or thinned to a wash; you have greater control over the colour when painting wet-in-wet, and they dry to a matte finish. Horadam Naturals also have some watercolour characteristics: they are mostly semi-transparent and can be successfully glazed to increase depth or optically mix colours.

Dried colour can be lifted out with a damp brush to create highlights. You can also work a wet colour into a dry colour – this is an effective way of lightening colours using Rügen Chalk. Horadam Naturals mix easily with other Schmincke watercolour and gouache, so you can add these unique hues in your existing palette, and combine to explore the creative possibilities. Once Horadam Naturals are dry, their matte surface provides the perfect base for dry media too.

Horadam Naturals offer up Nature’s soft, subtle colour palette – what will
they inspire you to create?
